It was also the swan song of Emperors and Kings leading their armies in the field, men who were brought up to lead their men in person, risking death or disfigurement, but gaining personal glory. By Waterloo, countries were industrialising and the urbanisation of Europe began, democratising the nations and bringing a close to the horrors of constant war that had haunted Europe for so many years.
